You will be offered a savior this week. I guarantee it. And it’s already Friday.
On Facebook or on Fox News or on MSNBC or at work or hanging out with friends you will hear someone tell you what can fix one of the following:
(b) race relations
(e) your workplace
Some of these solutions may be somewhat wise. Some may be flat out nonsense. But unless they are rooted in the reign and Gospel of Jesus Christ they are at best temporary fixes.
There is no one in Congress who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and was resurrected from the dead. There is no pundit on TV or radio who can effect your atonement before the Almighty. No new or old political system wrought by purely human hands will last a billionth as long as the Kingdom the Messiah will set up for His people.
King Jesus will bring real peace. Is Himself true hope. Will bring a real end to lies and murder and racism and poverty and adultery. Those of us who know Him offer a real Savior in a world of noisy impostors.
From Isaiah 2:
“He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”
I believe in working for real justice and goodness and mercy in this life, because that is my spiritual and obedient worship to Jesus Christ. But if I can offer a truly Christmas warning to those who don’t know Jesus: Beware of people who offer you a program or an idea in this life, with no mention of Jesus Christ, as though it will accomplish lasting good.
Beware of false Messiahs. They are numerous, very seductive, and ultimately impotent.
And to those who do know Jesus, myself included: Do not submit your heart, your time, or your speech to lesser gods. A cause is a good thing until it captures your heart and your hope. At that point it is an idol. And, like all of them, deaf, dumb, and unable to deliver what it promises.
